Wood craftsman, a not very common job...

I propose you to follow the making of an object from the choice of a piece of wood till the polishing of the object ...

A nice billet ...

a billet

Everything starts with the choice of wood billet. I buy bullets to local wood producers, mainly in Lozere, but also in the neighbouring counties. I don't follow any written rules. If I like the billet, I buy it. Sometimes, my stock of wood (or wood stock :-) ) becomes too big, so I stop buying new billets. But, I always have the pleasure to be surrounded with nice billets.

A billet tells you a lot : its age that you can know by counting the rings, but also the quality of the environment in which the tree grew up.

I buy different kind of wood : ash, beech, elm, acacia, box tree, chestnut and also fruit trees such as cherry wood, walnut, apple tree... I buy them either in planks, boards or in billets according to the objects I want to make.

that will be slowly transformed...

at work

Pieces of wood can be worked following the direction of wood fibers or perpendicularly to them. The first way is easier than the second one. It will also give larger shavings.

Every piece of wood has its own features. It will be for instance a knot in the wood or larger or smaller wood rings...

According to the piece of wood I use and of the object I want to make, I will use different tools. Each tool has a specific function.

Once the object has been shaped, I treat it with regular kitchen oil (olive or sunflower oil) to make it shine and allow it to be used for alimentary use. I then rub it with shavings. You can see the result !
